Scan
Sound, Inc. successfully developed the very first MRI patient stereo
sound system in 1986, and initiated a patent for the device shortly
after making the product commercially available. (See
Business Briefing). The first system was created by Barry Leeper,
a Biomedical Engineer, specializing in MRI systems. Barry was intellectually
challenged by the need for a system that would improve patient throughput,
reduce the number of aborted scans (due to claustrophobia) and improve
the overall marketability of MRI imaging centers. One of the Doctors
from a new MRI site approached Barry, and was willing to fund the
costs of building a working patient stereo system, as the facility
was faced with competing head to head with numerous other scanners
in their area, and every patient scan was crucial to the success
of their business. The MRI center could ill afford to re-schedule
patients or have the scanner stand idle while waiting for the next
patient to show up. The stereo system enabled them to not only improve
their throughput, but as it turned out, it provided an unexpected
bonus of also satisfying patients so much, that it gave the MRI
facility a marketing edge in their local area, as the facility became
known as a "Patient Friendly MRI Center". Many of the
patients told their referring physicians how happy they were with
their overall scanning experience, and it led many to continually
refer more and more patients, because they knew the patients would
be pleased with their scanning experience. That first patient stereo
sound system became a prototype for many system sales to follow,
based largely on the word-of-mouth advertising.
Scan
Sound, Inc. expanded its services, as a mail order manufacturer
of MRI patient stereo sound systems, intent on keeping the cost
of the systems low, by selling the systems in kit form. Scan Sound
was able to offer patient stereo sound systems for under $4,000
as other companies began to copy the Scan Sound concept, offering
enhanced variations, generally priced around $18,000 to $25,000
each. Scan Sound was able to tap the lower end of the market quite
successfully, due to its initial design simplicity, and keeping
the systems in kit form. The strategy paid off, as kits were shipped
out on a continual basis. The company established a network of individuals
and dealers who sold and installed Scan Sound patient stereo sound
systems throughout the United States. Several of the MRI manufacturers
began offering the Scan Sound patient stereo sound system kits as
well, satisfying their own base of customers who actually began
to demand patient stereo sound systems to improve their competitive
edge through this MRI system enhancement.
To this day, Scan Sound, Inc. has stood by its network of dealers throughouth
North America, made up of small sales and service companies as well
as MRI service personnel who all sought to supplement their income
earnings potential by marketing the Scan Sound patient stereo sound
systems on their own. Scan Sound's own bonus referral program enabled
many individuals to refer new system sales leads in return for a
commission on those sales, further building and expanding the base
of systems installed thoughouth the United States. Many of those
who passed on sales leads were the service personnel who wanted
their favorite customers to have the best in stereo system technology,
not to mention the fact that they were entrepreneurial, looking
for ways to supplement their income. It turned out to be a win/win
situation for all involved.
Scan Sound has always strived to assemble the highest quality stereo
sound system kits, while some competing companies sell systems that
do not offer true stereo, for substantially more money. We have
always included all the materials typically needed for a neat, complete
and clean installation, from the extension cord all the way up to
the most sophisticated components. We even provide headphone hanging
clips, to keep the headphones hung up between patients. A large
portion of the company's sales have come from word-of-mouth advertising,
which can be directly attributed to the satisfyied existing customer
base. Scan Sound, Inc. has always aimed to keep their prices low,
despite the increasing costs of all the materials needed to build
the kits. Through it all, Scan Sound has continually made numerous
significant improvements while maintaining a commitment to quality,
consitency, fair prices and total customer satisfaction.
One factor that has contributed to the quality and reliability of the
Scan Sound patient stereo sound systems, has been attributed to
utilizing the highest quality, commercially available stereo system
components. By sticking mainly with Sony stereo equipment, Scan
Sound has had only one known system failure in all the years of
offering patient stereo sound systems, most of which have been shipped
across the country. The Sony products seem to hold up extremely
well, and all the customers have embraced the Sony systems as being
easy to operate, exceptionally attractive in design, and consistent
in delivering high quality sound performance.
